About Karon Travel

Karon Travel is a family-owned and operated company based in Ennis, Co. Clare on the west coast of Ireland. It was established in 2006 by Hugh Carthy to service the corporate and tourism markets in the mid-West region of Ireland.  The aim is to provide a professional, cost-effective service to clients requiring private transport in the region.

Hugh has come from a military background, having spent 18 years in the Army, retiring in the rank of Captain. This was followed by 10 years in senior management  with a multinational manufacturing company based in Shannon. He recently graduated from NUI (Galway) with a Diploma in Archaeology, and puts the knowledge gained to good use on guided sightseeing tours throughout Ireland.

Professionalism, presentation and performance are the bywords brought to Karon Travel from his previous experience.

The name of the company has 3 roots;

• Carron is a village in the heart of an area known as “The Burren” in Co. Clare. The area is a world-famous “moonscape” of bare limestone, unique flora, and a concentration of archaeological remains unmatched anywhere else in Ireland.
• There’s a German word – “karren” - that describes some of the geological features to be found on this type of exposed rocky landscape.
• And finally, Charon (pronounced Karon) was one of the ferrymen in the mythological Underworld!
